Nero clashes with 2 many other program's system dll's. I think it is overkill, and prefer to use the freeware combination of DVDShrink, and CDBurner XP Pro (which also does DVD's very well). These programs also totally remove the asinine copy-protection from the material.

#7, Is DVD shrink still a free s/w ? It appears like you have to opt for one of their support options for the download...

#8, I think someone took advantage of the dvdshrink name to sell their own program. If you go to afterdawn, you should be able to get it there.

DVDshrink won't copy a lot of the new movies. Especially the ones by Sony/Disney. I downloaded the latest CloneDVD, and the latest AnyDVD, and have been able to copy anything with no problem.

You'll have to get them through bit torrent if you want them for free because they are retail programs. A good place to go is isohunt.com.

Doesn’t DVD shrink need a 2nd party burning software like Nero?

You mean like Nero BURNING ROM. Everyone should be full aware this doesn't include burning rom (which most people just call 'Nero' anyway). That's how they get ya... damn marketing.

version 6 is good enough for me. plays well with dvdshrink. sony and disney ain't worth bothering with anyway.

I actually have a large collection of the Disney movies for my daughter. They never discount the classics, and if you don't buy them when they come out, you are stuck paying more than retail for them.

I have to copy them because I don't want my daughter to wear them out. I would really hate it if I had to pay $50 for another copy of one she likes.

And last time Ben touted this very same product, about three weeks ago, didn't y'all tell me that the actual product being sold is Nero 8 Essentials, not 7 and that 7 is okay but 8 sucks? Has bad conflicts with Vista or something?

I clicked on the link, and once again, it is Nero 8 being sold, not 7, even though Ben says it is 7. What is up with that? The first time, I thought it was just a listing mistake. This time, I don't see how it could be.

if u want to back-up dvd movies u can't go wrong using:
1)dvd decrypter to rip
2)dvd shrink to compress+encode
3)an iso burning program like dvd decrypter, alcohol 120%, or nero to burn iso

this combo will work everytime

I use DVDFab Decripter to get stuff off the DVD for free, it handles all the new tricks they keep coming up with that choke DVDShrink since it hasn't been updated/supported for some time. DVD shrink does a great job of compressing down to a single layer DVD. DVD shrink will hand off to Nero 6 to burn it automatically if you tell it to. Works 100% of the time for me.

#17, I am with you. I use DVDFab to rip my movies, remove all the extra crap that I don't want (previews, "making of...", interviews with actors, etc.), shrink with DVDShrink, and then burn with Nero. It takes about 45-60 mins per DVD, but I get exactly what I want, and by removing all the extra crap from the DVD that I will never watch, I am able to salvage most of the picture and sound quality from the main movie that is otherwise lost to extras.

#s 17 & 18. Me too. Actually, I just use DVDShrink on the easy ones to save time. Any DVDs by companies that obsess over copyright protection I run through DVDFab 1st.

#19 I've had too many times that I've started with DVDShrink and things seemed to be going fine then come back and find it choked on something and had to start over and use DVDFab to make it work. Now I just do it as a matter of practice. DVDFab gets it into my PC in 5 - 10 min so I can DVDShink it at my leisure. DVDShink always handles DVDFabs output with no problems. DVDFab Decripter looks like a really good program beyond the free ripping part. It also lets you chose what device you are going to put the video into and creates the right file type, resolution, and bit rate based on this. Haven't tried it yet since I'd have to pay for it but if you do portable video looks sweet.
