Buying it locally adds about $62 in sales tax for me. Amazon is usually OK with returns so I would opt for buying from Amazon. But since I don't have $640 neither option is open for me. However, if I do get $640, I am prepared to exercise my purchasing power.

Amazon doesn't charge tax so add another $50.00 on top of the $10.00 with CC.

Another thing to consider is if buying a extra/addition warranty check pricing CC was $10 more for a the same $299 camera than OfficeMax, while CCity was another 4 miles away! But true, I try on some things (like a camera) to buy it local and in this case a "bring back warranty locally" Amezone (sold thru J&R) wanted $329 for the same camera and $39 for a two year. OfficeMax gave me a 3 year for $39. I drove away with it for under $365 tax and all.

That's not good for you #11. But since I don't live in one of those States it's good for me.

Be sure you also try out the other low end to mid level DSLRs like Canon EOS 400D, Sony A200 or A300/350, and other brands before you jump at this camera. Go to a local camera store and actually hold the cameras and see what the menu interface is like on them. Each has advantages and disadvantages which are mostly based on personal preference.
Also, if you are a first time DSLR buyer, do you *really* need a DSLR? Perhaps a very good point and shoot is easier to use and provides excellent results for most people. If you are not a technical person or patient learner, why spend the extra cash on features you will never use?
