I ordered one of these yesterday. I've never had a Hitachi hard drive before. I always heard bad things about Hitachi's and people called them Deathstars. But the reviews I read on this series of drives Talked about how Energy-efficient they are. They are very cool and quiet. Would be good for a HTPC. I hope it's a good drive.

This model is touted as the most energy efficient desktop hard drive. It draws as little as 4.8 watts in idle mode.

The DeathStars (60GXP, 75GXP) were made by IBM. HGST drives have been pretty good since the 120GXP. Quite often they had chart toppers with low seek times and/or noise levels.

Anyone know how good this drive compare to that Samsung's?

My recent Dell came with 2 500GB Hitachis mirrored (DataSafe) and has a Vista "Windows Experience" score of 9 While that's no official benchmark to base things on, my 2 new Seagate 7200.10 500GB drives only get a 5.7 in a Gigabyte board with the same sata controller as the Dell. Is that enough to say Hitachis are faster, I'm not sure. Could be the Gigabyte mobo, but I thought that was interesting.

#5 Vista's benchmarks give a high score for any mirrored RAID array for some odd reason.

Lots of Newegg complaints about random access speed, the claimed value of which I was unable to find even by downloading the full spec PDF from the Hitachi site. If the posts on Newegg are correct, this drive SUCKS.

Also, NOT expired - still available at $50 with free shipping as of this posting.
