If you're thinking about remote control, unless you only need to control one or two devices and don't foresee ever needing expandability, I'd go with an x10 system (x10.com). Relatively cheap and many more options down the road.

#1 True.. I spend about $500 dollars on x10 products. Got my whole house control on my computer works great.. I also own 5 of this remote switch socket works great also, I paid about 7.50 each. Notice some of the remote works on difference frequency, and 1 on same. basicly use it for night lamp only.

These are fine for in the room, I have two sets. I don't try to use the remote from 100 feet away so it is possible that could be a problem but for in room/next room these work fine and they are cheap.
They are not intended to compete with a whole house system, both have their place. Four Seasons hotels and Motel 6 can be across the street from each other and not compete, they have different customers with different needs.
