"USB Direct plays photos and music from USB flash drives."
So can you play a video file such as a DIVX file right off a flash drive? Or can you only play music and images from a flash drive?

It plays divx files directly from your flash drive.
If you've got decent broadband , Download a torrent, copy to your flash drive, plug in into the front of this player, and start watching a movie in less time than it take to drive to blockbuster and back. Oh, and the movie is free.

PS3 plays DivX files? Because really, that is the only point of owning this player. It handles DivX incredibly well, but for some reason doesn't play regular DVDs as well as my JVC DVD player that is 10 years old.

The only reason for a Philips for me is they can play PAL DVDs and easily be made region free. I don't give a crap about the USB.

We bought 2 dvd players at the same time. Now, want to get rid one of them. Anyone in Virginia interested in ONKYO brand DVD player can come to pickup it for $50/obo. It is an ONKYO DVS-405S (S=Silver)

In my experience, this player does an excellent job of upconverting to 1080p through hdmi.
It is a little quirky. But would very much recommend to anyone not looking to go blu-ray yet.
And am not just saying that cause I'm selling mine (said it before)...

#1 I got a 5992 and it plays every video file I have tried on it from the thumb drive, even ones that do not play on my computer!
there is quite a range of quality, but the best video files look just as good as DVD.
