If you have not used a dvd recorder, they are pretty cool. They work as easy as a VCR but blank DVDs are MUCH cheaper than VHS tapes and will last much longer. Rewritable ones are reusable like video tape. If you tell it to delete a recording, it will add that time back to your amount of available space on the disk. You also do not have to spend time or make detailed notes about what is recorded and where (tape counter) like on video tape. Instead you type in titles for the recordings on the disk. My recorder is a cheapo insignia?(bestbuy house brand). The only bummer is sometimes tv programs have the copy protection signal turned on so you cannot record! But it is strange because I have seen recent movies that were not protected (flushed away)

Never buy a cheap brand dvd recorder unless you have an option to take it back. Some of them have horrible encoding.

I bought and returned 5 dvd recorders to Best Buy before finding one that I liked.

I have the insignia that is actually lite on and although they make pretty decent computer drives the home unit is crap. I dont get it because its a pc drive in the home unit but that does not change the fact that it wont play hardly any disc even factory ones. three letters SUX

I only used my dvd recorder to record and playback discs I recorded. I use a toshiba upconverter that I got a few years ago at costco for playing prerecorded (movie) DVDs.
