But is it worth it to get this or this year's model, the 790IS which has improved optical image stabiliazation, 10MP, and is a little bit smaller. Cons are it doesn't look as good and it has less optical zoom. Price through CC is $15 more.

Well, the 870IS has a 3.8x Wide Angel lens... Which is a major selling point for this camera. I doubt you will see any difference between a 2MP difference unless you're printing out poster-size images. As far as the 'improved' IS, I can't really comment on that.

I'm also curious as to why canon hasn't offered more Wide Angele lenses in it's newer models. But in all regards I've wanted this camera for a long time and haven't got it yet.

Yep the wide angle thingy make this one different from others.

I have this and bought it at $315 and love it. Image stabilization has not been a real problem for us and we took a number of moving pictures from our car on a recent road trip with only one image stabilization problem (user error - nagging wife).

If someone is considering a new camera, I highly suggest this one.

How's the policy at CC for camera's. This seems to be a great price for this camera.
