I bought a 32" Scepter LCD at Costco for my parents, and the remote had a working acceptance angle of about 2 degrees. It had to be dead center to the middle of the set at 12 feet away to work.
I called Scepter tech support and was told that, yes, that's the way it worked - there was nothing wrong. And the guy was kind of snippy about it as well, as if any fool should know that and I was wasting his time.
I would NEVER buy another Scepter set.

I have a Westinghouse with the same exact problem. I bought a "Next Generation Remote Control Extender" of Amazon for $35:

I was skeptical, but it is amazing! It has a rf transmitter that you replace one of the batteries in your remote with. You then put this UFO looking thing in front of the device, or there is a little "eye" with double-sided tape that you can stick over the transmitter. I actually put the UFO in front of my DISH box and put the "eye" on my Westinghouse TV and the transmitter in my DISH universal remote. I can now easily control the volume from the TV and the DISH without any line of sight requirements.
