Any reason I should upgrade? I'm happy with version 6, and adverse to bloatware. I use Nero for everyday disc burning, and occasionally use the backup feature and .mp4 encoder.

#1 I'm also using Nero V6. I may ponder upgrading when the day comes that I purchase a Blu-ray or HD-DVD burner, but for now Nero gives very little reason to bother.

Actually, I use Nero 7 and find the Nero Vision very useful when it comes to making your own movies (even from slides). The templates are a lot better in 7 than in 8, but unfortunately are not upgradeable to version 8. I would say that if you have the extra space & memory & feel like experimenting, go for version 8, else if you simply just do CD or DVD burns then versions 5.5, 6 or 7 are just fine. A word about the rebates, though. The rebate company processing some of these rebates (rebatestatus.com) is notorious for stalling payment, so unless you like to gamble or enjoy harassing the rebate company when they don't process your rebates, I would stay clear of any "rebated" item. I am still waiting on my $20 upgrade rebate from version 7, which is still "being processed", but it took a year to get the $50 rebate. Rebate or no rebate, I think version 7 was worth the $70, but I think I'll hold out for version 9 before buying Nero again.

I placed an order with Frys last night. They sent an order confirmation email. In the morning they sent another email saying that the thing was out of stock. I checked the site again this morning and the item is still "in stock".

Weird. Never had a problem with Frys before.
Anyway, Nero movies maker sucks. Sony Vegas rules.

I'll agree that there are better products for making movies, but how many are F-A-R ?
Frys is prob taking pre-stock orders and expecting receiving their shipment soon. If true, they should say so on their webpages.

I agree that you get what you pay for. Theoretically, yes, you will get the rebate check after 8 to 12 weeks. In some rare case the check never come. Frys checks arrived, btw.
Windows give us free stuff like Windows Movie Maker too. If we have to pay, why not aim something decent? Else, get something really cheap (read: free) and wait for a better deal.
I got Sony Vegas Platinum with Sony DVD Architect $45 AR last year from Frys. Excellent combination and work with HD movies. I tried everything including from Nero, Adobe, and many other free stuff. Sony Vegas is the best and most affordable.
