Apple really needs to work on their quality. As expensive as it is, you would expect them to last for a little while. Here are a couple very recent articles:

rant begin
Seriously, kids.
"Outdated"? Will these ipods stop functioning when the new MacBooks and ipod devices come out? Or is it that you can't be seen by your friends with anything tech toy that they can say, "OMG, that is SOOO last year!"
With an average of 15 hours of music per gig-- just how much ipod do you need? Or are you amongst the "music hoarders" out there who simply must carry their whole 120GB library because they lack the ability to manage playlists? Really? Just how much old Christmas wrapping paper do you have saved in the closet? Do you keep your old underwear in a box under the bed or something because you'll never know when you'll need to wear it again?
Or is it about movies? 'The Matrix' in 512x384 @ 24fps takes only 750MB of space and it's 2.5 hours long. So that means, 4x(512x384@30fps)= 10hrs of movies and it still leaves you with ~5GB (we'll say 4.5 just to allow for the 1024 conversion and OS) leaves you with 67.5 hours of music. Carve that down to 4GB for 60 hours of music and leave 500MB for Jailbroken ipod touch applications and you have a very useful device.
Recap for the kiddies:
10 hrs of high-quality movie
60 hrs of music
500 MB of apps
= 70 hours of linear time usage.
+ unlimited hours of non-linear possible with applications.
Your battery, and interest, will wear out way before you've eaten through that much media. And unless the new ipod can shine your knob, just what type of advances are you expecting the new generation to have that are going to blow your kilt up?
"Obsolete" and "outdated"...brilliant.
rant end.
