mine runs quiet. it makes some noises when it boots up but after that i can't hear it. i have seagate drives in it which probably helps keep it quiet

#5, does this unit shut down/sleep when not being accessed for some time or does it always stay on? Also, had you compared this to the DNS-323?

I'm just looking for a simple NAS and trying to decide between the 321 and the 323.

#11 the 321 has faster transfers than the 323 for files above 32 or 64MB. Basically the 321 seems to be more optimized for large files, which is usually better anyway because large files take the longest to xfer.
Of course if you need a USB print server port, only the 323 has it. Not a big deal for me tho since I have a 3-port USB print server, and 1 port wouldn't cut it anyway.
