Hmm... free portable DVD player versus a 7 point hit on my credit score ...

True #1, but at least it seems a bona fide offer...

I signed up for the MyGPSOffer a couple of months back, for a free Garmin nuvi200 w/Discover card application & activation (need to buy at least one thing with the new card and pay your bill). I got my nuvi reasonably quickly thereafter. Interestingly, it was shipped direct from Amazon.

I applied for one a couple months back for the DVD player...got the card, used it, still waiting for my player....

Me too still waiting for my Ipod Nano from the same discover more offer few months back...

Has anyone received their DVD player yet? I also applied more than two months ago but have not received it. Emailed their "customer service", got this junk reply, telling me I have walk to Mars and come back if I want to get this DVD player. I fired back an angry email, then they changed the steps to something more reasonable, but I still have not received anything. Sounds like scam to me.

What's more reasonable than walking to Mars and back?

Congrats, you Discover'd that you just got screwed by a shitty credit card.

Discover Card is not accepted in many places !!!!

Have you ever tried to cancel a Discover card? They never include the link or phone # in any of their communications, and their Indian Subcontinent staffers know nothing about such an option.

I also got in on the free ipod nano offer. After I completed the requirements, I got an email saying that Amazon will be fulfilling the offer (no link or tracking # or anything, though) within 10 weeks, which for me would be Oct 29. Stay tuned....

#13, if you cancel the card, your credit score takes a hit.

I heard that credit bureau's don't bother categorizing canceled cards (like "I canceled it", or "The card company canceled it because I failed to pay")... all they know is that it was canceled and so they assume the worst.

Another way to think of it is that you have less available credit, so your debt-to-credit ratio will be greater (thus a bad thing).

Someone correct me if I'm missing anything ...

You're missing a lot. That is a myth. I've see a ba-jilion credit reports in my life, and cancelling one lousy card won't do anything.

Now pay the bill more than 30 days late...that's another thing.

I did the Discover for a Flip Video player deal a few months back and got mine, also shipped from Amazon. I'm doing this deal.
