Not a Symantec/Norton fan but I did this deal a while back. There are a few good bits and ebay the rest. The NIS will be tough to get off your system once its on it. Rather virus like. It is so bad that you need to download the "Norton removal tool" to eliminate all the error messages you will get after uninstalling it. I did get the rebates but they are in the form of a debit card that doesn't work very many places so is a pain to use up. May/may not be worth $6 to you.

NIS 2009 is out now, so you can download and install it using the NIS 2008 product key.

The Norton Ghost that was included in SystemWorks Pro 2003 was very helpful in cloning a dying hard disk. Don't know if this version of Ghost is the same or better, but if it is, it's worth $6.

last time i did this deal it included ghost 10, and that program is still useful. gave away the iss and never used the partition magic

There's a free alternative to everything. For Ghost, the free solution is pretty easy: just make a linux boot disk, and use the dd command. The first command here copies the MBR from your C: to D:, and the second command copies the rest of the data:

Code:

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb bs=512 count=1
dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/hdb1

For partition handling, the linux solution (linux fdisk) is ok, but it takes a while to learn, and sometimes it won't work and you have no idea why. Partition Magic is really good, and probably worth the money to some people.

If you need a linux boot disk, you can use toms boot disk, which fits on one floppy:

I just tried my version of ghost on the SystemWorks Pro 2003 Cd on a new build the other day and the damn thing refused to load up after it rebooted..bacon was Xp, I don't know why it didn't want to cooperate but it sure pissed me off. Any good disk imaging programs out there?

Older versions of Ghost don't support SATA drives. I'm making a guess that was the issue.
