this is clearly deceptive advertising on AMEX's part. most of us saavy bensbargainers know this fact, but newbies beware!
you earn 1% on first $6500 charged in a given year
5% kicks in only after the $6500
read the fine print and you'll see

#1 needs to reread the fine print.
$0-$6500: 1.0% every day purchases; 0.5% all others
Over $6500: 5.0% every day purchases; 1.0% all others
$0-$6500: 1.0% every day purchases; 0.5% all others
Over $6500: 5.0% every day purchases; 1.0% all others

I call BS on #2...To reach $2000 cash back you'd have to spend $37000 at gas, grocery or drug stores(5% category). Thats a lot of gas and groceries. Based on my spending history I would have had to spend $108000 so far this year to get $2000 back.

the more realistic cash-back for our family (of 2) is about $300-400 a year.
(but we've had the card for a while, so our tier is $6000 not $6500 for the percentage upgrade)
my wife and I use it for all our monthly purchases, and then we just pay it off at the end of the month.

#3, yes it is even worse than #1 said. this is a pretty bad deal IMO. There are many cards that give you 1% back on every charge purchase. If you want amex then the starwood card is better. It has a fat bonus for signing up and getting a nice hotel room for 4000 points is quite good when a cashback card that is only worth $40. The alaska airlines card is the best right now IMO. the signup bonus is a roundtrip ticket(or 2x 1 way). After that a one way ticket is 10,000miles (going to 12,000 in november) not bad when that same ticket can cost over $400 to buy.
