I think a lot of people share your initial reaction, No. 5, but these fixed-gear bikes are immensely popular with messengers and other urban riders because they're cheap, lightweight, easy to maintain and give what some say is a better feel for the road. The drawback is that the pedals spin as fast as the wheels, meaning you can't coast and that going downhill at any speed requires some furious pedaling.

This will be the perfect bike for Julio to get to and from the Home Depot parking lot, or tomato fields. It's only single speed though, so don't try to outrun "la migra".
