I considered this laptop, and when I went to Best Buyto check it out, I discovered that the particular Best Buy was clearancing their ASUS G50V-X1 Gaming laptops, and the only one they had left was the display model. Picked it up for $975, and I found the build quality and overall package to be much, much nicer than the Gateway.
From what I can tell, the ASUS is still selling for ~$1250, and even at that price I still think it is a better system overall.

Depends on what you're after. After getting over the copper color, I've been loving this Gateway. I wanted the crazy 1920x1200 resolution (crazy for a 17" anyway). This beats my quad core desktop w/ 8600GT in CS:S fps. What's also not mentioned in most specs is the 2nd hard drive bay, although it seems currently RAID doesn't work unless a firmware upgrade can fix that. Still nice to have the option for additional built-in storage. I don't see that much drain on the battery from 2 drives.

Yes the firmware upgrade does fix the raid issue. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=303626 Also the Asus is a smaller screen, slower graphics, and cost as much, well more at a lot of online places. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220379

#2 - Understand that I liked the Gateway quite a bit, and still do. Price for price, they both pan out equally as they both appeal to different segments of the same market looking for different specs.

This notebook is by far the best notebook you can buy at $2000 range. If you want a better notebook you may have to pay $2000 more which gets you better video card but the improvement will not be significant.
