...why even bother buying a sound system at all then if you're only looking for video passthrough?

I'd rather turn it down on the fact that it doesn't have internal video upconversion, something my TV does horrbily.

Because #3 I have an older Onkyo with one HDMI pass through, but with a PS 3, Direct TV HD DVR and a Toshiba HD player I would like a reciever with more than one HDMI port but it'd just be easier if it carried sound as well. I don't really care which part handles the video upconvert. For $200 if it did it'd be worth it for convenience and de-cabling.

so does this mean if i get a ps3, i've gotta plug the video in the TV and the optical audio cable into the 506 if i got this?

I was going to try and explain it myself, but fortunately Vann's site actually does. In short your HD source, player or whatever does the video preocessing but you can pass the video signal through the reciever via HDMI but you need to connect the audio to the receiver via other connecting options:

"The Onkyo TXSR506's three HDMI v1.3a video pass-thru inputs provide an advanced interface for transporting high definition (HD) video with Deep-Color capability including 1080p content from Blu-ray players, HD set-top boxes, and the latest generation of gaming consoles; but you'll need to use one the receiver's several connection options for multichannel audio."
