Not sure why you think these are ridiculous, hackers can and have ripped people off using RFID readers.

It depends on whether that leaves a gap large enough that the RF (frequency used) can escape from. There is a good chance it will so a sleeve around the card is a better option.
Do a search for "faraday cage". There are wallets available with this protection sewn in. These sleeves are a less expensive option, though.
