Friend got this in his car last week for his iPhone 3G. pretty good reception on his radio for the FM transmitter. Looks like one of the few car mounts to actually support the newer 3G since it charges via USB instead of Firewire.

How well would this function as an impromptu GPS system? I know the iPhone's GPS doesn't support turn-by-turn directions, but it seems like it'd be better than nothing.

I've never done it, but they say that the iPhone battery will still go dead after 2 hours of google maps even when connected to a charger. It just uses too much juice.
Now, if Tomtom really does release their GPS app, well, this would be ideal - assuming they figure out how to use less power and if this will be OK on its side.
