I bought one of these back in 1942 - still running strong!

It WAS a tried and true router - 4 years ago.

Only problem is the newer ones aren't supported by the open source firmware (hyperwrt, dd-wrt tomato) which can make these pretty useless!

#3 - that's why you get WRT54GL :p

these are old back of the warehouse full of dust with rat holes in them. I think you'll be safe with them being an older version to use the open source firmware.

basic but solidly refurbished?

No. "basic but solid" "refurbished WRT54g" (so he claims, anyway)

FWIW, we ordered at least 10 of these a few months ago when they were listed and all work great. Some we gave to employees for home use, others we put DDWRT on for specific uses.

I ordered one of these refurb units last month. They were backordered then, and just recently received one.
It was a version 8 WRT54G. You can load DD-WRT (micro) on it.

Found one at Goodwill for $6.99 and DD-WRT'd it.

$33? BAH!

I had a new one that was a piece of shite, it needed reset at least once a day. I beat it with a hammer in a fit of rage, went and bought a netgear and have had no problems since (neither router nor rage related).

DD-WRT on the WRT54G is amazing. Super stable, advanced features found in hardware costing 10x the price.
