As an alternative to this garbage, try the Sears DieHard 400W inverter. This plugs into the cigarette lighter socket but gets good reviews and has reasonable protection circuitry.

The Sears one is $30. If you want one like this wait for Deal a Day or Woot. They sell theirs for less than $10. Just got my Deal a Day inverter. 100W continuous 190W max.

I'm very skeptical about the quality of this thing and so wouldn't risk using it with an expensive laptop. Much better to go with a known brand from a company that'll stand behind their product, especially when you can pick one up for very little more than what this inverter's going for. Meritline, as you may already know, doesn't even cover the cost of return postage for defective items, so you won't get anywhere with them if you run into problems.
