I was never good at math but how is

$450.00 + $11.00 + $340.00

Is this new math or am I missing something?

yes they are. i haven't seen 10.2" eee but this seems to have a thinner bezel around lcd comparing to 1000.

this is new math ))) ... and i'm getting 10.2 for less than 340

The 900's are NOT the way to go. It's got a crappy processor

I hear the acer mini is better. I suggest comparing before buying.

how do the ssd's on these things compare to a platter hd?

-- I strongly recommend AGAINST this. Instead get an almost exact comparable & better quality product; the ASUS Eee PC 1000H. Read the review I posted here.

ASUS Eee PC 1000H:
*) Bluetooth-Enabled - YES!
*) GREAT SOUND SYSTEM
*) 160 GB HD w/ 1GB of DDR II RAM
*) 6-cell battery (not a 3-cell)
*) Screen resolution: 1024x600 LCD Screen
*) 1.3M pixel webcam & MIC
*) 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (See the N!)
*) Windows XP Home
*) STRONG integrated WLAN card

==> ASUS Eee PC 1000H vs. MSI Wind NB - 10-inch mini-notebook face off
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/eeepc-wind-faceoff.aspx

-- According to ASUS, the larger 1024x600 resolution display will allow users to view A4-size documents and Web pages without the need to scroll left and right.
-- For connectivity, the 1000H includes Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and 100Mbps Ethernet.
-- Other features include a 1.3M pixel webcam, built-in stereo speakers and microphone, and three USB ports, 1GB of DDR II RAM, a SDHC card reader, and Intel UMA graphics.
With its Super Hybrid Engine technology, ASUS claims the 1000H can adjust CPU frequency, voltage and LCD brightness to minimize noise and energy consumption saving up to 15 percent of power consumption or maximizing performance.
-- The 6-cell battery is claimed to last four and a half hours.
-- The Eee PC 1000H is now available in two colours, white and black, and retails for $699 including GST.

-- I have the ASUS Eee PC 1000H & it's great. I'm glad I didn't get the MSI Wind cuz it's sound is much lower quality due to poor speakers. I got it for $540 though. Well worth the little bit extra money, but this deal IS a good deal.

Don't leave us hangin'... what's the answer?

I get $801 but I'm using the old math approach...

The Acer at $350, with 120GB HD is a much better buy at microcenter and others. The Asus 1000H 160 is a lot more expensive, but worth it. I bought one at ZZF for $450 (now $30 higher) and like the bigger screen and, especially, keyboard.

The 1000H is a really nice, very small, notebook. The 900 is a netbook. They are really very different in size, weight, and durability. If you value portability and durability over screen, storage capacity, and keyboard size, get the 900, else get that 1000.

I've seen a lot of comments about slow SSDs in 900s, so I'd check on that before I got one. I'd also make sure I could handle the small keyboard.

#11, I've read a number of complaints of the 16GB SSD being pretty slow as well.

Does anyone know what the speed of the HDDs are in the Acer One's?

thanks MikeS... anybody know when the successor to the 1000 is due?

I got the 1000H. I like it. Am on my desktop most of the time but when I need a lil laptop to take to class, etc. it is good.
It is surprisingly fast.

I certainly do not agree with the sound though. I noticed mine are only a bit louder than ....headphones (just out in the open) really. Pathetic. I think it is just an issue with mine and didn't bother to RMA it since I already spent hours installing and updating stuff.

#14 monx,

>> anybody know when the successor to the 1000 is due?

-- I don't know if THIS BELOW is the sucessor, but they're certainly bragging about the colors on this model here.

-- Eee PC’s with preinstalled touchscreens may be launched in early 2009.
-- Dual core Atom Eee PC’s will be launched as soon as Asustek can get a hold of the processors

-- I doubt it's a sound or speaker issue. I've noticed that certain YouTube videos and certain other stuff plays quietly. To test it I'd recommend trying out the sound at www.Pandora.com (a really cool customizable FREE Internet make-your-own radio station). Then compare it to an mp3 in Windows Media Player.

-- On Pandora I get moderate sound, but when I use Windows Media Player to play certain mp3's, my system cranks. Sometimes to hear a video on YouTube I've gotta reach for my mini instant plug-in speaker (w/ 2 AA's) that I got at Big Lots one day for like $9 or so.
