A black variety of diamond, found in Brazil, and used for diamond drills. It occurs in irregular or rounded fragments, rarely distinctly crystallized, with a texture varying from compact to porous.
Obviously a thousand times more inferior to the more often sought ‘White Diamond’.

But... given #4s definition, if it's "rarely" crystallized, and often porous, then the rarity of an actual diamond like black diamond which is crystallized and smooth, might actually be higher than the rarity of traditional white diamonds.
Rarity, combined with demand creates cost. So if the demand were high enough, it might actually be "worth" more than traditional diamonds. That said, I think demand is low, and these are better left to industrial applications.

Anthracite coal is often called Black diamond. It is crystallized and can be polished. Sweet, "Here you are babe. Some coal...you know, for your ears."

girls don't like black jewelry. rule of thumb: the more it sparkles, the more you'll get 'sparkled' . unless shes like goth

Rarity is controlled by De Beers.

I agree with #14, diamonds are not rare at all, De Beers controls the number of stones on the market. That is why they are "rare."

It's easier to make black diamonds into jewelry because the imperfections aren't nearly as obvious.

What is the jewelry world coming to? Can't we have some stability in the hues of our gaudy decorations? What will it be next: red jade, blue topaz or green platinum???
