Price is good before 10%+ shipping charge.

There are a glut of these things out there these days (projected to be a slow mover this holiday season) - what brands do people like the most? (I'm looking portable)

Garmin. I am a very stingy shopper and am GLAD I paid a premium for the Garmin quality, name, warranty, etc. Everything's been great and I wish companies with their level of quality and service made all of the products I owned. (And no, I don't work for Garmin, don't own their stock (yet!), and don't have friends or family that work there. I just call it as I see it.)

But garmin is like 100% more save the money and buy a better one within a year when this one breaks!

I have been using this Navigon 2100 for a few months now. I don't have any complains. For the price you pay, it serves all the purpose. I have used in mountains, searched nearby for restaurants... No problems whatsoever! I would highly recommend this. I bought it for around $100 in Staples. The price seems to be going down constantly!

Are there any functions missing from this one that the higher priced ones have?

It's not bad esp if you add the LifeTime Traffic Subscription. However, Navigon's menu'ing system is the slowest of all the GPSs I own. However, some users have changed the settings file and made the menu'ing system speedier. Routing on Navigon isn't as optimal as my Magellan and gives similar routes as my TomTom and Mio (they all use the same maps). Re-routing speed as fast as the other GPSs. However, my main gripe is the 2100's volume is not very loud even at the highest setting.

It has a pretty decent number of POI's for the price. I would say for the average user this is a pretty good GPS.

I would agree to fork out a few extra bucks for the Garmin. Fantastic unit. Quick satellite reception, awesome POI database, and terrific navigation.

anything under 4 million POIs makes me think twice. Depends on what you use it for though.

this unit doesn't come with the built-in traffic and lacks bluetooth phone connectivity compared to the higher priced ones

I've used this for the past 6 months and it works great. It has a small screen but the brightness level of the screen is nice as well as the touch-screen functionality. Wish it had the free traffic like the higher models.

I really favor TomTom. It isn't as easy to use as Garmin or Magellen, but has the extra tweakability that I like.

Garmin is by far the better GPS
