Any of these the type where you go overseas, buy a sim card, and pay local rates instead of the OUTRAGEOUS roaming rates these robber barons demand from their customers?
If not, any recommendations along that line?

Yes, you can easily unlock the A437 (just search for the instructions on the web,) and then purchase a local SIM card. I did this in the UK this past summer - all incoming calls are free (in UK,) so I paid 10 pounds for a t-mobile Sim card with time and I still have 5 pounds credit left.

not as good as the T-Mobile Go Phone!
T-Mobile offers $25 refill card on some of the cheap one.

Off topic, but I keep a Virgin Mobile phone (Sprint network) in my car for emergencies, etc. Costs $5/mo. charged against air time and rolls over indefinitely. Haven't found a better deal for my purposes yet. Had the service for almost 4 years. No problems at all.

I have a Samsung a437, that was easy to unlock. I got another go phone, a Nokia, that would not unlock, but it works with att wireless regular sims. I would expect most of their go phones to work as regular cell phones too.

My advice: Steer clear of AT&T, a company that consistently gets low marks from Consumer Reports. If you need prepaid service, try T-Mobile or Virgin Mobile. You can get two years of cell service with the former for $110, assuming you put $100 on your account when you start service and then, the next year, refill with a $10 card.

T-mobile may have the best customer service and pricing, but they also have the absolute WORST coverage of all the carriers.
I was with them for several years, and getting service inside buildings in major metropolitan areas was very difficult. They have done almost nothing to build out their infrastructure in the years since I left them.
There's no point in having great customer service if you can't get any bars at your location.

Would love to upgrade the phone, but att says I can't have the discounted upgrade for another year. All phones they will offer me are not for "ghetto dogs!"

Not many left in my area. Jump on this soon if you need a replacement for your lost or broken phone (these will accept your existing sim card).
