The lens works okay, but I would advise going for an upgrade. The price makes this one a warm deal.

if you don't need active d-lighting and an internal sensor cleaner then buy the d40/40x and use that saved money on better lenses

Everyone dogs the kit lens, but I think they're fantastic. It's very sharp, focuses close, and is tiny and light. Overall Awesome for walking around in the day, and with VR even into dusk.

just get the d40 or d40x. d60 is not worth it.

I don't see the point of this camera. Either buy the D40 and a 18-200 lens or upgrade to the new D90. This camera is stuck in the middle and doesn't give you much. If you want a great camera, go nuts and get a D90.

Definitely worth buying as kit with the lens if you are not a pro...they are hard to come by brand new at that price. The next level wide angle zoom is pricier.

Either move up to the D80 or D90 so you can use the screw-drive lenses, or move down to a D40 and use only AF-S lenses. Use the $100 you'll save buying the D40 kit and purchase the excellent SB400 flash.

The original kit lens is 18-55mm VR for the D60, although VR doesn't play as an important role in this lens than other longer lenses like 18-200mm.
I own a D40 and played with D60 before, they are very similar cameras, but D40 is much worth buying than D60 ($200 difference). I do agree with #13 that SB400 flash works very well with D40, and that's all you need for a beginner.
