since when? it's still a great media format for very cheap. DVD will be officially dead and Blue-Ray blanks are sub $1/each.

What do you mean DVD is dead. I still have VHS tapes and a bunch of DVDs. Why would I throw all that money away just to have BluRay? BluRay will come around just like DVDs did. By that time this machine will be worn out, it will be time to buy a Blu Ray player and the price will be the same as this.

For a few bucks more you should get the latest Philips upscaler with USB. I think the DVP5992 is the latest model. Bear in mind it only upscales over HDMI. Also I'm not sure if they have made any changes but when upscaling 4:3 material it stretches the picture to fit a 16:9 screen. You can still watch in 4:3 with pillarboxes but only at lower resolutions.

When HD-DVD comes back, it'll be called CBHD, no longer HD-DVD. HD-DVD is dead. It will be cheaper than Blu Ray's but do you live in China?

I also agree with #6 except I purchased DVP5990 at Philips online re-manufactured for $40+tax and free shipping with USB. The only issue I have found with the Philips players is the slow opening of the tray.

Does this thing have an hdmi port and does it upconvert? If not, then not worth it.

Go with one of the other models with HDMI and USB. There is always minor glitches with Philips like remote that works intermittently. Other than that Divx reading is a great feature.

I had this one years before for $40, the price doesn't go down at all? LOL.
