60gb and sdhc, nice. easy to transfer vids.

My in-laws are shopping around for a new camcorder. Between this one and the Sony HDR-SR11, which one do you think is a better pick? Specs are about the same but the Sony is noticeably more expensive. If the Sony is a much better camcorder then the price is obviously worth it but I'm not sure which they should get. Any opinions?

I would get the Canon Vixia HF10. It has 16 gigs of built in flash, and an HDSD slot that you could put another 16 gigs in for a total of 32 gigs. I think it's one of the best on the market right now, and the price is a little bit higher than this one right now. Here is a review:

I use to sell these HD camcorders at Sears, and I had a few customers that complained that they could not transfer their recordings onto their computer because the USB port was no longer working (became loose over time). So please be careful when you pull out and plug in the USB cables

For about the same price you could get the HF100 if you prefer something even more lightweight/compact and you're willing to sacrifice capacity (e, HF100 has no HDD). Another benefit with an SD-only camcorder is that you never have to worry about the HDD crashing and taking all your irreplaceable footage with it.

If you get one without an internal Hard drive, that just has a card then you have no moving parts and the camera is silent, it's awesome, there are no motor noises at all. I have the HF100 and it is great.

Just watch out for the AVCHD format if your in-laws want to edit on the computer, it takes a good fast computer and higher end software (IE windows movie maker will not play you file at all, windows media player cannot play your files).

the lower cost ones that record to a sdhc card in Mpeg-2 might be the way to go, those play anywhere and edit anywhere.

The Vixia HF10 and HF100 are the same camera. One has internal memory, and the others don't. They are both great cameras, and you wouldn't go wrong with either one.

Get the Vixia HF11 MUCH better than the older models. It outdo the HG20 by increasing the bitrate of recordings.

Any1 get the extended batteries, generic or otherwise for the canon HF100/10? Standard battery only lasts 1 hr but they say the generic ones dont give u the remaining time left to record etc etc.

you can get cheap batteries on Ebay from China, but they do not have the 'smart chip' in them, so you do not get the time count down.

You also are not supposed to charge them on the camera, which is the charger for the regular battery. But they work just fine, you just need to pay attention when you go to plug it in to dump video on to your computer.


Also! Headphone jack, and mic jack, 24, 30 and 60 fps

I have the Canon branded extended battery (model BP-819) and it shows the remaining time left just like the standard battery. It's bigger so it sticks out the back of the camcorder a little (< 1cm), but it holds double the charge.

Flash memory is the future. I will be getting an HF series after I upgrade my PC (waiting for Intel's i7 chips).

This (and the other postings for camcorders) are fantastic. We bought an old Hi8 recorder for my first daughter 13 years ago for twice this price. It lasted about 3 years and now I'm stuck with tapes and no way to transfer.
