i've heard that the unlocked sim card needs to be in the phone in order for it to function on other networks.

iphone without unlimited data outside of wifi sort of defeats the point. What makes the iphone so great is you have the real web, where ever you go. Unlocking is a sorry substitute to the full service. Now, if Apple would dump the spying bozos over at AT&T.....

Well, if you were going to be in another country for an sort of extended time and still wanted to use your iPhone on another pre-paid plan, it'd be the perfect solution. You'd probably have to be there for at least two weeks to make it worth it though. $3.49/min rates (in Peru for example) isn't cheap. Even the "world traveler" $2.29/min discounted rate is too pricey. I guess it's better than $4/min in Afghanistan or $5/min in Georgia (the country) or Kyrgyzstan.

I would imagine that AT&T would get pretty pissed if they caught you doing what number 4 suggests.

I hear that once you insert these into your iphone it's bascilly a brick there after. No more firmware updates once you have used non-scantioned software or unlocked the phone service.
It's the Mac-way or the highway...

you'd be better getting the first iphone style if you want to unlock it. why get a 3g, when att is the only 3g carrier here in the US? as i understand tmobile isn't up and running yet.

I heard someone say that T-Mobile and ATT's 3G networks are not compatible with each other because they are on different frequencies. If that is the case then there is no point unlocking the 3G phone to use on the T-Mo network. A first-generation iPhone works just fine.

As far as unlcoking the iPhone 3G to use overseas, that's totally understandable. I wouldn't trust this hardware unlock though. You might eventually have an expensive brick. Wait for the iPhone Dev Team to come up with something /grin

I have an ebay version as #1 suggested, works intermittently with a T-Mobile sim for calls only. Powering the phone off then on again seems to correct it when it stops working but, as #3 said, the novelty wears off quickly without the internet.

same here, I got one of the Gevey ones
and i got one of the i-SmartPhone ones.

Initially got eh i-SmartPhone and it didn't fit in the slot with my sim card. Then i bought the Gevey one for $30 and it worked for about a 3 weeks then it gave a 'no Sim' error. I sanded down the chip on the i-SmartPhone and it finally fit and works for about several days, then i have to fiddle with it (take it out and put it back in) and it works again for a while.

So the consensus is that this doesn't work (well)?

i got one of these (diff. brand) on ebay and it works fine. it was a little hard to get it to fit but once it's in there it works fine.

The brilliance of the iphone matched with the idiocy of AT&T, kinda like dressing in a tux for a pig wrestling contest.

not worth it at all, if you need one of these check dealextreme or go to local wireless store that are owned by asian and have them do it for u for lot cheaper

    #19   Gunfighter6 - Posted 5:04 am PST 11/18/08 (96 Posts)
Can I use iphone with regular Verizon or does it have to be 3G? I'm confused about this 3G thing. I have a regular cell phone which I dont't think is 3G.
