    It's HD-DVD that's dead.

Now we're talking. This is only ~$75 more for burning capability and it is still cheaper than the cheapest BluRay standalone players. I'm still going to wait for it to drop to $150 though. (or maybe someone will drop that low for Black Friday?)

wow. the $150 price range is definitely within striking distance.

Unless BRD-R/W discs are far less prone to DVD rot, I don't see anyone getting much utility out of a burner. It's cheaper, easier, and faster to just back my files up on hard drives.

I agree with #7, unless they start giving away BR disks. I'd give $10 more, then.

    Fry's in-store has Memorex Blu-Ray write-once blanks in a 15 pack for $59. So that's about $4/disk. Rewritables are still $12-$15 or more.

I have this burner (paid $239 at Fry's.com several months back) and it's verrrrry nice. I've only done BD-RW so far (have a few rewritables), downloading XVID TV shows while TimeWarner and our local NBC affiliate were spatting, burning them to BluRay and then playing the resulting discs in the PS3 attached to the HDTV. Worked perfectly, and 25GB (actually, 22GB formatted) holds a lot of TV shows.

It also rips CDs perfectly, burns them quickly, and is the only burner I've owned that can burn the Matrix brand DVD+R/DL that I bought a few years ago from SuperMediaStore (or similar). The first batch I received was fine, but the second batch can't be burned by Lite-On, Samsung, or HP burners (all burners just hang when burning starts and I sometimes have to actually reboot the machine). I was about to toss them but decided to give this LG burner a try, and lo and behold, it burns roughly 2 out of 3 just fine, and rejects the rest with a data error. They also play back fine, although I won't trust them with anything important. So that success is a positive sign, in my book.

I was hoping that, with the HD-DVD read capability, someone would eventually come up with a way to convert HD-DVDs to BluRay disks (at least, extract and convert the video, if not all the special features or menus). That would allow me to future-proof my collection of HD-DVD disks (mostly bought on clearance). Still hoping that something like DVDFab will eventually gain this ability.

Also rips CDs and DVDs without errors. Great burner, highly recommended.

Got it about 3 weeks ago when NewEgg had it for $199. Definitely worth that price. Excellent machine and the media prices aren't that bad when compared to high def DV tapes - discs are actually cheaper than the tapes!

The price needs to drop more to make these attractive and become main stream.
