It's about time this processor became cheaper. I bought this in Nov 2007 for $199. $20 drop in 1 year....?

The key is that most players are dumping their old system chips now that the i7 is out. Common folk don't realize the rip that is occuring.

i got this on bf2k7, retail kit for $186 + tax + motherboard. the prices have not dropped on this at all. Just wait for fry's to sell the boxed for 190 shipped.

Great Chip. Oooh it not 45nm, big f'n deal, great OC headroom, runs cool at low voltage, more room in this chip than most motherboards can take advantage of. Still overpriced, get 25% off BIY on ebay.

so what apps are currently out there demanding 4 cores?
core 2 duo is more than sufficient for most users.

Windows 7 you are really going to need quad to run everything smoothly.

BFD. That's what they said about Vista too.

A lot of us have everything we need except a decent proc. I am not going to buy a new mobo for a new cpu. Besides, it will be awhile before any apps take avantage of the new cpu's features. I think the q6600 is the celly 300 of today.

This is not a particularly good deal. It is just slightly less than its normal price. Unless you plan on spending another $40+ to get some good cooling, always go for the retail version because it is very often less than the OEM and comes with a 3Y warrantee and a fan that is good enough.

"it will be awhile before any apps take avantage of the new cpu's features"
Windows OS (any version) takes advantage of this.
Photoshop after effects (appears) to take advantage of this (all cpus going nuts during rendering)
MAME32 takes advantage of this (if you are a gamer)

Here are some benchmarks from Everest:
CPU #1 CPU Type DualCore Intel Pentium D 930, 3000 MHz (12 x 250)
CPU #2 QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad, 3000 Mhz (9x333)
*I overclocked q6600 by only putting piece of tape over pin 1 - thats all
*Granted I dont know what these BM's are doing but I do have 2 machines side-by-side to compare

#15, you are comparing a Pentium-D to a Quad Core with benchmarks that you have no idea what they represent or are doing? What a waste of a post.

Bought one for cheaper on e-bay 4 months back for 170 shipped. It was lightly used and I was able to overclock a bit. On a 64 bit operating system you sure would use 4 cores if you like multitasking, ie music, internet, gaming, buring disks.
