Must I say it again? Widescreen monitors are for suckers who don't understand basic geometry and don't realize that a N" widescreen monitor has less screen space than a N" standard monitor. Not to mention that widescreen is ill-suited for viewing documents which are typically taller than wider.

Wide screen monitors are better for watching movies and playing games so it all comes down to what you use your computer for.

I agree with Mitda, and I agree with Gassyjoe. Both are right.

Although the non widescreens have more screen space, there isn't anything above a 20" for a non widescreen and it is extremely expensive.

Just turn the monitor sideways, then everyone can be right.

Also, Office Depot is suppose to have the Acer AL2216Wbd 22" monitor on sale for $130 come Black Friday. I don't know if it will be available online again this year or if you'll have to go to the store but might be worth waiting a week to find out.

From a graphic designer standpoint, a widescreen gives you more space for toolbars that tend to run down the sides of the screen.

    Show me a decent 20" or larger 4:3 ratio non-widescreen for $160, #1.

It's not about widescreen or not, it's about total size per $, though it's painful to lose the vertical pixels with anything smaller than 20" widescreen.

what i like about widescreen is that i can put two windows next to each other. like reading a document in one window while writing a critique in a second window, both side-by-side. normal aspect monitors are too narrow to place two windows side-by-side and too short to put windows top-to-bottom.

at least with a widescreen you can place two windows side-by-side or turn the monitor sideways and view an entire document page at a time.

That's true on 19" or smaller but not on a 20" to 21.n" monitor, you'd typically have either 1680 horizontal pixels on a widescreen, or 1600 horizontal pixels on a non-widescreen.

    1680/1600 = 1.05

The widescreen monitor has only 5% more horizontal pixels, that's not enough of a difference to really matter when it comes to viewing documents side by side. However, as others have pointed out a non-widescreen over 19" is significantly more expensive.
