So I have an older TomTom One and if I want to upgrade my map they want to charge me about 100 bucks. Makes no sense I tell you.

Great deal! Tomtom is a solid brand at a discount price - might pick up another for my brother at this cost!

Any comments on whether this or the Garmin Nuvi 200 for $97 at Walmart on BF is the better deal?

You cant go wrong with either TomTom or Garmin. Both are outrageous when it comes to upgrading maps, but unless you need to go into a new development, you can work off the old map for years. I've had mine for 3 years and only gone off the map once.

Garmin sucks. I had an old TomTom Go 700 (still have it) that out performed a new Garmin. The Garmin didn't even know where we were. Is this TomTom ONE as good as the GO series?

It is true TomTom map update is outrageously expensive sure, sorry #1, you bought the wrong brand name. As for #4, Garmin North America map update at Amazon.com is about $50, so affordable. It is true that you don't need to update your map every year.
As for #5, I beg to differ. I have a Garmin Nuvi 360 and compare to TomTom Go 700, it beats TomTom hands down.
All those under $100 GPS or entry level GPS like TomTom 125 or Garmin Nuvi 200 or Magellan 1200 are OK but I would not buy it for they don't have text-to-speech.

In the end, you really won't go wrong with Garmin or TomTom. I have a TomTom Go and love it; it has a few more features than the ONE, but it's the same underneath. TomTom and Garmin I believe get their maps from the two (different) big map-makers, so your results will vary. When you start comparing POI databases, battery life, TTS, and several other options, you can see which one is for you. A site like .gpsreview. can help with that.
