I have this camera and I think it's fantastic value; less MP crammed into the same size sensor means less noise with nigher ISO settings; that may be the reason this camera does not even offer ISO 100 (200 is its minimum)

Great price. Both lenses are very sharp and the D40 is one of the only SLRs with an unlimited sync speed.

You gotta go with the D40x (10 MP) or the D60. 6 MP just isn't worth it since this camera is semi-pro why screw yourself with slightly under performing MP? This same camera at 10 MP may be the last one you'll ever need.

I had the D60 and returned it due to high noise and terrible dynamic range. Go with the D40.

Personally, I like the D50 since you have more control, but a lot of my friends have the D40 since it's a solid entry level DSLR

#6 Megapixels don't matter unless you are printing posters. Image quality does. The D40X has ended production anyway. DSLR bodies have a shelf life that is measured in months. Good lenses however will last you for years, maybe decades.
The D40 is the best value in a DSLR. Multiple sources will confirm this. If you have no pre-existing biases or you are not invested in another platform, get this deal. Adorama is a reputable reseller.

With the d90 out prices for the d80 are falling dramatically. Better to ebay it with microsoft's 30% cashback program. Save up to $200 right off the bat with better controls and better low lighting abilities.

#9, I agreed with you totally.I purchased the D60 (for my relative, also from Adorama, excellent service by the way)and I found out the pictures of D60 isn't good compared the D40 (#7 explained it all)7 to 8Meg is perfect, don't let the mega pixel fool you.Costco had the D60 with 2 lenses (both are VR), Nikon bag for $650+tax= ~ $710 depends on where you at if you like to buy a kit of D60

My wife prints posters and hated this camera. D90s are a couple hundred more and offer much better picture quality. On the Canon side, the XSI is really fantastic-went down to the local photo shop and compared the d40, 60, 90 and XSI and the XSI was far superior.

I like ken rockwell's writing, but I disagree that the D40's 6MP can print at 20x30. I feel like 8x10 prints great and 11x14 is okay.
Though I don't think any 35mm format prints great at 20x30. Ghettodog1, you should get your wife a medium format film camera and a decent scanner and she'll be blown away by 30" prints from it.

don't get these crap kit lenses, spend a bit more for quality lense and your image quality will improve greatly. I hear the Nikkor 18-200 VR DX is a much better lens and its one lens covering the range of both of these lenses.

YEH, BUT IT COST MORE THAN THE CAMERA AT $600. THIS SET IS GREAT FOR BEGINNERS. YOU CAN'T REALLY TELL THE DIFFERECE USING THIS OR THE 18-200 LENS. I HAVE THEM BOTH.
