how does black and white color work?

I believe they mean that it prints in Black and white but scans in color.

Laser cartridges for this are pretty inexpensive. But the drum will cost as much as the printer.

Had this printer for years of heavy usage! Solid and still going! I recommend you get the refurbished MFC-7820N in Staples for about 120, it's the model that has network printer server. Great product.
