with the latest software update (allowing divx decoding), this makes a good media center extender.

#2, I have thought of replacing my XBMC and soft-modded Xbox with a 360. For the 360 to be a media center, do you need to be running a special version of Windows? Can you hit a Linux computer running Samba, e any Windows shared folder? Does it support mp3 and Xvid playback or just DivX?
Thanks
Thanks

Can this be easily upgraded with a 2.5" HDD? Would think not...

As for support it does work great with mp3 and Xvid, no transcoding needed. However if you do have a file format that it doesn't support you can use software like TVersity to transcode it to the Xbox and it will play fine as long as your computer and network are fast enough.
Hope that helps.

#7, thanks for your reply. I have a Buffalo Linkstation NAS. I forget if I have Gentoo or Debian running on it. It is fast enough to serve up a couple of SD video feeds over my network. Currently my XBMC can access the files on my NAS transparently. My wife can easily use it. I leave my NAS on 24/7 and it doesn't consume a lot of power. I do not want to have a generic PC doing the same thing since it would consume too much power.
It appears then that the 360 is not a good replacement for my needs. Thanks again for your reply.

This is a good price. You can find xbox 20 gig hard drives on Ebay for around 20 dollars, which is all you need if you don't plan on ripping a huge music and movie collection to the drive.

I'm in for one. I wish they didn't have taxes like some of the other shops online, but hey, $172 out the door isn't too bad. Circuit city has those refurb 20s and controllers for $40.

#15, that sounds like a good solution but my only concern is the power consumption of a PC running 24/7. I can understand that you already had one so for you it's a non-issue. However, currently my NAS does what I want it to. I am simply looking to upgrade my Xbox/XBMC to support HD and to satisfy upgraditis.
I don't play games on my Xbox so gaming on the 360 is not the draw, but it would be fun to finally try Halo 3. However, getting the wife to allow me to buy this without having a real need (e media player upgrade) is going to be difficult. For gaming I already have a Wii that I don't play too often.
