good price for the person thinking of getting into DSLR's. XS has some decent features and the lenses included in this set will give you the range you will want (sans the wide-angle).

Good price for the body and 2 lenses and Canon makes a good camera, at least for beginners. However, unless the 75-300 mm lens is image stabilized, it isn't worth much.

While Nikon is great, 6.1 mp is awful low for DSLR.

#4 I still shoot with an original Rebel ( 6.3mp ) and I have no issues with image quality or resolution. Lenses and skill are still far more important than how many megapixels you have once you get above a certain level.

    as for this deal

Check out DPreview.com since this new camera is an inbetween model. Some of the features of the old, some of the new and some quirks. It's still not a decent deal, but the body has some limitations that might be bad for someone who wants a lot of upward mobility later.

Regardless of skill, you are still limited to the final size of the print. I like the option of being able to print poster-sized prints.

#6 A clean shot off of my original rebel easily blows up to poster size ( 20x30 ). I have several, including ones that I have sold.

These cameras shoot great pictures. The telephoto lens is excellent. We use it for little league games and get great close-ups

    how much do Megapixels mean?

Cheaper at Amazon.com. $457 for both XS kit and zoom lens with free shipping. Must add both to cart and both be purchased from Amazon. You will receive a $150 credit when you check out making the lens free.

Megapixels mean *something* -- but there are other factors
that are much more important in determining how good a
photo from camera 'a' will be vs. one from camera 'b'.

Putting more pixels into the same size CCD means that you
may well end up with a worse photo, because there will be
greater noise and less light sensitivity, unless there are
substantial improvements in the quality of the components.
The quality of the lens (oft called "glass") is also
    paramount.

Then there are issues of usability, effectiveness of
image stabilization, lag, dust, .... If you think it's
all about megapixels, buy one of those 12-megapixel
    consumer cameras and be happy.

MP count is really not important unless you need to print very large size photos. People should consider the photo quality more the MP count. Sure, newer model got bigger MP count, shorter response time and faster frame/sce- but that doesn't means the photo quality is better.
I tried this camera but this is not better than my rebel XT 8Mp photo quality. If you think about Cannon DSL -get XSi or 50D. Actually I am targeting 50D as my upgrade from XT.
