If you, per Ben's recommendation, check user reviews for this drive, you'll find that it has a tendency to corrupt its onboard firmware and render your data inaccessible. Not a desired feature.

You have to remember most companies charge extra for that. Seagate adds it for FREE! Better than the Sony root kit! I've got 8 of these drives, and only 1 mechanical failure, so not to bad. Backup, Backup, Backup!!

    Good price for 500GB.

Seagate just reduced their warranty to 3 Years (effective 1/3/09) for all their OEM barracuda drives. Get it before that date and you still get 5 Years. You'll need the warranty: AS series drives seem to have reliabilty issues...

    What does the ".11" mean?

.11 is the generation of drive. It has nothing to do with tech specs

3 years from 5 seems like no biggy, I don't really use any drives that are 3 years old anyways. I got stacks of 100 - 250 gig drives laying around. Even a 500GB that I need to send away for repair that would just sit around if it was fixed anyways. 500GB 5 years from now? they will have that in a thumbdrive. hehe

5 -> 3 is a BIGGIE. I've had several drives fail that were between 3 and 5 years old. I only buy 5-year warranties now, since prices are comparable to those with 1 or 3 years.

reliability > warranty. at these prices the drives are disposable...your data is not. regardless of that, seagate is still > than the majority of manufacturers. if there are so many comments regarding issues with the drive, please link to articles and statistics...not a handful of newegg or bensbargain comments. people without issues don't complain.

I do not really care about 3 year warranty. The way technology advances, we may all be using SSD drives in 5 years. And these 500GB drives will not even exists. And hopefully, there will be 5-10TB drives.

What is the interface for SSD? Thanks.

is 7200 really worth it if i care more about battery life on my laptop?

Something tells me this won't fit in your laptop...

Make sure your drive is 5 yr. warranty. SG is lowering their 5yr. to 3yr now.

if no one will care about this hard drive in 5 years, then why would they bother reducing the warranty? obviously it costs them money in the 3-5 year area.

people are saying that technology will be so advanced that in 3 years they won't care about their drives anymore. So, if majority of people believe this, seagate won't have to reduce their 5 year warranty to 3 ? But people are gonna do it anyways to get a free drive. The say they don't care, but will do it anyways to get extra storage. I don't see SATA 2 getting obsolete in 3 years. Seagate is like all other companies in this recession...reducing costs of operation! Plain simple economics.
