Do yourself a favor and get a real camcorder. Don't get the SD, you'll regret it in a month of usage. You're gonna say "Dude, I should've got a HD."

Good Camera for most people and doesn't cost $600.00.

Do yourself a favor and get a camcorder with a mic jack. Video on most of these things is adequate but the integrated mics always suck.

Do yourself a favor and don't get a 1080 camcorder unless you have late model, high performance computers with large screens. Editing 1080 requires a lot of CPU and GPU power, memory, drive space, and resolution. 720 is cheaper and might be a better choice.

You don't need a lot of CPU power for editing 1080 HDV video. That includes High Def MiniDV camcorders such as Canon HV30 or HV20. Recently I bought Canon HV30 from ZipZoomFLy through eBay for $580- $180 MS cashback = $400. I'd expect lots of good deals on electronics after X-mas.

MiniDV camcorders are cheaper and have higher quality video.
