They really need to make the screen bigger.

They really haven't changed the size of the image sensor. To get 14.7MP on that sensor, I imagine that you'd get a lot of noise with this camera. This looks like gimicky marketting.

I believe this camera has the same sensor that you'll find in the G10, which has been more or less universally reviewed as mediocre, particularly in anything resembling less than perfect light. Lots of noise.

This is what you end up with when you market to an ignorant consumer that will buy the camera with the larger number every time because "more is always better".

normally, the black finish on electronics are cool, somehow, don't feel that way in this case... dunno why

32MB of memory. Can you even take one photo at the highest setting? With memory so cheap, how can they insult people by bundling such a worthless amount of memory. At least put it in the camera so you can use it in an emergency if your main memory is full or missing.

    #4, it uses Canon's Dig!c 4 sensor

DIGIC 4 is an image processing technology, not the sensor (CCD) itself. That said, I'd be very surprised if Canon sourced that part form Sony.

From NY Times: CANON POWERSHOT SD880 IS ($252). This camera has a 4X zoom, wide-angle lens. Customizable top button; it can be a Movie button so you don’t have to change modes for video. Huge, bright three-inch screen, but too bad there’s no optical viewfinder.

Gorgeous and solid. Controls are beautifully thought-out. New processor chip makes this camera very fast. Not many gimcracks, but wow, those photos — in any kind of light, they have a presence, detail and vibrancy that puts the other cameras to shame.

Doggone that Canon. It wins this contest every single year. C’mon, people — where’s the suspense? Bottom Line: Get the Canon SD880 IS, if it’s in stock; its speed, design and quality tower above the also-rans.

I want them to bring back the LENS from the old S400 (not SD400), and pop a bigger sensor in there ... *that* would be a pocket camera to spend money on! (my SD870is isn't bad, but it's not as sharp as the S400 it replaced.).

But, yeah, the SD880is is what I recommend to friends, now.

okay for a sub-30 MP cam

I got the SD880 in $199 at dell.com. I am missing the view finder (not that i used a lot in my old camera), other thing I didn't like is that the back of the camera is plastic. Everything else is nice. I took pictures and video with my SD600 and compare them with the SD880 and it was day and night.... the SD880 is completely worth $250, The SD880 is the best camera I ever had period. Navigation is little different but once you get used to it is easier and faster than older models. One thing I am not sure if is a Pro or Con is that video is save as a .mov file (not .avi) so I have to find new software because VirtualDub doesn't work with .mov files. I think

Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_Digital_IXUS for the differences in all the Powershots SD series, i think the SD880 is the top of the line, first one with Digic 4 processor and the only one with Wide Angle of the new generation.

This is INSANE for the price. 14.7 on a point and shoot. Can we say pixel cramming. I would think the SX10IS is a waaaay better camera for the money. Or if you really really want the pixels you can get he G10. This SUX

As a point and shoot, the camera is great for taking photos at casual outings. Complements my Canon Rebel Xsi.

In digital cameras, it's not about the MP, but more about the CCD (very little known fact).

The SD880 is about $250 @ Amazon and BB. Agree with #9 and #13.

for those that actually want the facts, this camera is real nice, those that say the 880is is better couldnt afford the 990, its like the guys that say a hyundai santa fe blows away the sucky lexus rx330.. and the guy saying get the G10, the 990 SUX?
they use the same sensor and image processor LOL
read what ppl that have both cameras actually say:

uhduhh high MP = noise!!! blindly assuming this is just as bad as those that will buy a cam just for MP, check this review and how this cam has higher MP and lower noise that previous canon models

this is the only powershot sd with manual controls as well, further blowing away the 880 in capability
    #20   sombec - Posted 6:32 am PST 12/23/08 (324 Posts)
I am assuming #18 bought the SD990, I can't comment on it beacause I don't have it. But I don't need 15MP and just the fact of having a wider angle for indoor pictures has more benefits to 99% of the people than having manual controls.
