putting this cpu in a cheap mobo kinda defeats the purpose...

From what I read... this can be overclocked easily...

The evga nforce 780i also listed here from buy.com may be suitable, but 8GB seems limiting for a gaming system.

The motherboards look like $300. So you are probably into $700. Look at Toms reviews to find a nice core2 that you can overclock.

The quad cores are good enough for 99% of all applications and games.

to anyone who buys an i7 I have one word for what you are:
suckers.

Everything other than video encoding the phenom 2 is about the same, except you don't have to get a new motherboard or DDR3 to run it.

Yes, lets drop a grand. Then when intel updates after the I7, you can just upgrade again!

wait on this stuff, mobos are too pricey.

actually some of the deneb processors (phenom 2) will use ddr3 and the am3 chipset, requiring a new motherboard and maybe ram (although it may be backwards compatible with ddr2). certain models will be able to work on the am2+ platform so make sure to get one of those to use with your existing am2+ motherboard if you don't plan on upgrading. also, make sure my motherboard firmware is updated to support it first if it doesn't already.

#2, someone should punch you in the mouth for using the term "mobo".

The i7 920 is going to be the standard processor to test against and beat in 2009. This can be OCed and it's very efficient at encoding (as is) Wink [image]

i agree with #12. punch #2. not for what he/she/it said, but just because i'm in a bad mood this morning. it's freezing outside here (2F) and someone needs to PAY for this.
