Best part of this deal is that the camera uses Minolta "A" lenses - the old Maxxum lenses. Image stabilization is in the body, making those lenses a steal, especially compared to Sony's baconhigh lens prices.

hardly a beginner camera... For anyone (like me) who has minolta A mount lenses around from an old film camera, this is a steal. And even if you don't, they can be bought pretty cheaply from ebay.

is this comparable to the d40?

No. You get what you pay for. But be prepared with any DSLR to spend 2X-3X+ MORE on the lenses, flashes, and filters than on the camera.

#4, the Sony A100/200 kick the Nikon D40x/D60's butt in standard features, while using basically the same, 10MP CCD sensor. The older D40 has a 6MP CCD sensor which is a good option as well, but still lags in standard features. Make sure any Nikon option has VR lenses, as without VR in the lens, the Sony in-body IS gives you a lot more room in low-light and slow slutter.

The A300 at Dishonest Abe's I found to be 466 after the promo code. Newness status details are unknown. You never know with these guys until and if you get it. BTW, The kit lens is pretty good and the 55-200 lens in another kit offer is supposedly a tad netter in some respects than the more common 75-300. The two (2) two lens kits are about the same price.
