I have read about people successfully putting one of these in a PS3. You will need to find a program capable of formatting a drive this big into FAT32.

I just installed one of these in a PS3 a week ago. I works very well, the ps3 will format the drive if you follow the instructions.
Make sure you backup your data on a fat32 formatted drive or stick.

Now that Seagate has downgraded their warranties, how much difference is there between drive manufactures now?

The Seagate uses 3 platters to achieve 500GB while the WD uses 2 so the WD will significantly outperform the Seagate.
