OUCH! I got lucky I guess, got mine just before xmas, 1gig memory, with webcam and XP for $281 shipped overnight. Guess all the good deals are gone on this one.

I been thinking about getting one of these, how do you like it?

It takes a little bit to get use to. But I like it. Its NOT a full power laptop. Its not meant to run Crysis or CAD Software. Its a netbook. I use it for general surfing and some video watching. Nice small, lightweight, battery life is great.
The keyboard is the most strange thing on it. would not recommend for typing papers or heavy document use.

I ordered one a week ago during the 20% code- ordered one with a 16gb ssd- arrived by FedEx yesterday and it has a 4gb ssd in it! Waiting for a return auth from Dell now. Pain in the ass!

Dealing with Dell Returns is a complete pain. I ordered two Vostro laptops which had bad optical drives ... spoke to like 4 people and the return process took almost 2 weeks b/c they never followed up with UPS to pick them up. I bought a Lenovo Thnikpad instead. Sad how Dell has tumbled.

Yeah -- I called Dell Customer Support this morning with a complaint and the guy told me there is nothing he can do. I asked to escalate to a supervisor and he said they don't do that. Then he hung up.

I was on hold for an hour with Dell. I got so mad that when the Indio dude picked up the phone I just started shouting obsenities until I coughed up my liver. I was at for 10 minutes until the phine started making that off-the-hook noise. I then realized I had shit myself and felt like such an idiot for getting all worked up over nothing.

I guess this is the place to tell your dell horror stories. bought a dell inspiron laptop in july at bestbuy for $600. harddrive died 5 months later. according to dell we were supposed to take it to bestbuy geeksquad and pay them parts and a huge labor charge to install a new harddrive. then we would submit the bill to dell and wait and hope they refunded the charge.
we decided it was cheaper and easier just to buy a hard drive online and install it ourselves. we finally got someone reasonable at dell who said they would pay for the drive. they must have realised we were saving them a boatload of money(labor charge).
so the rule is if you buy dell, do NOT buy it at bestbuy. if you buy it direct from dell they would ship you the harddrive with a fresh install of vista on it.

Like any vendor, they have low-end systems and high end systems.

If you bought a dell precision laptop, your drive is less likely to fail and your support will be a lot better.

Buy your dell through costco for the 90 day return policy. It doesn't make up for dell's customer service, but it helps.

Funny...all these problems with dell....i've had dells for about 8 years and every time i've had a problem, dell service has been really great. I get the part and tech the next day. I used the online chat once on a saturday and got the part and service on monday (not to mention i didn't have to wait at all for the online chat). Of course these are Dell Latitude laptops (business line). The latitudes cost more but they come with 3yr next business day onsite; which costs an extra $200 or more for the inspirons or Studio lines.

I've also had pretty good experiences with Dell. And my Mini9 is pretty cool for keeping on the coffee table or taking on road trips.

Just when you thought you couldn't get less laptop for your money, they come out with netbooks.

These are pretty good, except the stock 16GB SSD is SLOW AS HELL. It can easily run 720x480 video from an SD card, but if it is caching and reading much smaller video from Youtube it sometimes stutters. If configuring new, I strongly recommend getting the minimum 512MB memory and 4GB SSD, then upgrade to 2GB memory (Dell doesn't even offer this, and it is cheap, and super quick) and an after-market SSD (a little bit more work). You can reinstall XP from a thumb drive if needed. Google it.
