These things are really handy. Their advantage is that you'll actually have it with you when you see an interesting night shot. Too many night shots have been ruined by flash/hand blur/or awkward positioning on impromptu tripods. Sure it's size is not ideal for taking pictures of people, but I've found that my little tripod has also given me some interesting perspectives.

these type of mini-tripod are given away at various conferences and industry trade shows. I snagged one a couple of years ago and they have been handy.

these tripods are awesome! i bought one for the boyfriend that was rated the weight of an SLR plus a lens (about 6 lbs) and you can wrap it around poles and it's light and ultra portable. definitely recommend it! but make sure you get one that is sturdy enough to handle the weight of your camera
