Is there something out there better than Norton and McAfee?

Not a fan of McAfee. You can look at 10 different reviews and get 10 different winners on security software.
The security software vendors are financially benefiting from all the security threats. Makes you wonder what their programmers do on a slow day.
www.icsalabs.com has a series of independent test, but pretty much all the vendors pass. They really do not declare a "winner" - only report if a vendor passes or fails the various test.

Norton is way better than it used to be and definitely better than McAfee.

AVG? Does nothing against leak tests. How can you recommend software that tests that poorly?

I've used McAfee Internet Security for several years and it has been a good product. I added a PC and put Computer Associates Internet Security on it because the price was right. It's been pretty good as well. They both need some level of user input to work in a way that protects your computer but doesn't get in your way doing it. They both update their signature files daily. Scanning the hard drive takes a lot of resources if you're trying to work when it is doing it. I would buy McAfee again.

If everyone had Macs, people would write viruses against the Mac OS. It has nothing to do with the Mac OS being less vulnerable. It's all about maximizing damage. Go after the bigger target.
