Do you really need 14.7 Megapixels?

Of course not. A sensor of the same size in 8-10MP will generally result in better pictures with less noise.

I read an article somewhere on the internet that explains why a 8mp would be better than 10mp (given that both cameras are in the same class), it has something to do with the lens being the same size, so the image of the 10mp would actually be a bit worse than a 8mp.

I have a 6mp camera and out of the 3 years I've had it, I think I've taken a 6mp pic only once or twice. So I don't think I really need a 14mp camera.

Compact cameras have tiny sensors. Stretching more MPs out of the same small sensor, just gives you a crappier image (horrible ISO performance, more noise, etc). To the credit of the SD990, it does have a larger sensor than other cameras in this line -- but still no way near large enough to justify 15MP.
