I know this won't assuage all the anger, but the ASUS Eee with similar specs dropped to $179 + about $9 for UPS right now at Mwave, I just bought one.
It's only 4GB SSD and it's refurbished, but it's 8.9" LCD, 1GB RAM, and an Atom N270, no idea on battery life. I went for it.

If you've dealt with Dell at all you'll know they frequently update and kill deals without any warning. I'm sure Ben's taken a lot of grief because of this over the years too ....
