For pocket cameras, it will work nicely and bend into whatever shape needed and the grey parts are rubberized to "grip" metal, wood, whatever. It will grip a staircase nicely.
They sell these in different sizes - I think there are 3. I paid $19 (FS) a year ago and looking at the offer, these are between $8 and $14. Check the shipping.
I have traveled with one of these and used it perhaps 20 times out of 6,000 photos taken all over Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Argentina and the easter USA in the last year. My snapshots aren't very good - perhaps I should use a tripod more often?
The only caution I'd provide is that heavy cameras or lenses that move the center of gravity will make this tripod useless. For SLRs, this isn't strong enough to hold the camera.
There are other tabletop tripods on the site that are not similar to the pictured version. I don't know anything about them.
