Been the same price for the past month...
Not saying it's more than a decent price for a great CPU, but this deal is old.

Apart from all that, the "deal" Ben listed for C2Q Q9650 doesn't come close to this, as this is $95 cheaper than the older generation C2Q. Even accounting for the differences in DDR3 ram and X58 board, the total cost difference would not be significant enough to warrant sticking to the older stuff.

what MB do u recommend for the i7? how much RAM?

6GB ram minimum, DDR3. So that = about $300+ for good ram and another $200+ for the motherboard minimum. Don't get me wrong, I7 920's overclock like a champ, but jesus the cost isn't worth it considering the next processor intel makes will not be compatible with the existing processors and with AMD hounding on Intel very well with their latest processor - ( http://techreport.com/discussions.x/16583 ), it's not worth it. Sit out this round till next round, or get a phenom 2 for existing mobo's.

I'd go with AMD as well. You can build your self a much cheaper system equivalent or better than the Intel I7 System.

I just finished building a Phenom II QUad system and its running GREAT!!!!

Remember the i7 is actually comparable to having 8 cores, not 4, because each core do 2 threads at once. Windows task manager shows 8 operating independently of each other. My Core i7 920 Dell Studio XPS 435mt screams... even running Vista Home Premium. Performance on video conversion is especially great - most full 8gb movie DVDs (with extras) convert to XVID & AC3 in about 15 minutes with Handbrake. (after a 10 minute "rip" with DVDShrink. I haven't gamed on it (yet) and probably won't do much of that, so I can't speak to it, but I'm very happy with the performance thus far.

My prior system was a home-built AMD Athlon XP 2800+ which served me well for 6+ years up until a few months ago. But the convenience and extended warranty of a Dell was well worth it now that my time is at more of a premium. (Also, when I bought in December, the individual components were still high priced and would have cost more than the system from Dell.)

Its a great deal on a processor that is $270+ everywhere else. Not everyone knows about it, so I don't see anything wrong with Ben posting it again.

I bought my Q6600 from microcenter and saved $55 back on 3/08. They seem to have very in-store deals on intel processors lately.

oscar: look at the benchmarks, all amd processors don't even come close to core i7. Even intel's previous generation of extreme processors can't beat the core i7, and those processors costs around $1100

I have the 940 Extreme dude. The AMD i built on the cheap for a friend.

damn, intel try to make so much $ from customers, 2.66 i7 only 230, and 3.0 core 2 quad cost 325?

DDR3 is on the way down and the I7 does have good headroom so you can squeeze a lot out of it.

Agreed #14 - I don't know what you're smoking #7 & 8 - not that I'm an AMD fan boy - but they aren't and haven't been even close in performance since C2D days on price or performance. I have one of these i7's at work and it shows up as an 8 way processor and blows through anything I can throw at it.

Is it worth the extra money for the super-expensive ram + $200 minimum motherboard - well - probably not. I won't be upgrading anytime soon at home (c2d 6850). But go to some review sites and check your facts before blindly giving uneducated opinions.

#5 the main mobos that have been in the overclocker's eyes are the P6T Deluxe V2, eVGA X58, and the Gigabyte - UDR5. I went with the eVGA x58 because of their online forums and tech support. I hear they all 3 overclock great!
